Gloria Dei’s Social Ministry Team is committed to promoting service to humanity through acts of love and justice and to increasing a greater awareness within the Gloria Dei community to the emotional and physical needs of society. Gloria Dei has a long history of support for both local and worldwide outreach programs.
“. . . and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8
“I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” Matt.25:35
“Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Heb. 13:1-2
Some of our programs include:
Clare House Meal
Every other month Gloria Dei sponsors a meal at Anchorage’s Clare House for homeless women and children.
Loose Change Ministry of Spiritual Life
Every month we choose a different recipient for this way to support our community. Recipients have included McKinnel House, The Downtown Soup Kitchen HOPE Center, Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission, Lutheran World Relief Quilts, and many more.
God’s Work, Our Hands
Thank you to all who supported Gloria Dei’s God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday Food Drive for Lutheran Social Services Alaska. We filled the LSSA van and Pastor Karin’s car with 1900 pounds of food. In addition, the funds donated will enable LSSA to purchase an additional 3900 pounds of food. Grateful we were able to help with nearly three tons of food to those in need.
Blessing Mission Quilts
About 50 warm, colorful quilts were folded across the pews— the work of many Gloria Dei hands. Our congregation reached out and touched the quilts, knowing that the next person to feel its comfort will be someone continents away or a homeless child in Anchorage. These folks will be blessed in a way that might be hard for us to understand as we head back to the comfort and safety of our own homes.
Destined for the very neediest in our world, whether because of chronic poverty or natural disaster, these gifts will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief to refugees and others in need and by Salvation Army’s McKinnell House here at home.
